Sally Mayfield
Clinical Specialist in Hand Therapy Sally is a Clinical Specialist in Hand Therapy and has 13 years of experience in Hand and Upper Limb specialist therapy. She is a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT), one of only 5 in the UK, achieving certification by the Hand Therapy Certification Commission (USA) in 2007. A Certified Hand Therapist is a recognized distinguished qualification demonstrating a dedicated therapist who has met the highest standard of proficiency, and is recognized as a benchmark for excellence in advanced specialty of Hand Therapy.
Sally has previously established and managed her own Hand Therapy private practice in Australia, and has worked at a number of leading Hand Therapy units in London, including The Royal London Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, and St Georges Hospital.
Sally is a trained NeuroMetrix Nerve Conduction Study clinician. She used these specialist skills in the innovative 'One-Stop Carpal Tunnel Clinic', a UK first, run through Charing Cross Hospital in association with Professor Jagdeep Nanchahal (Professor of hand surgery/Chief of Imperial College Musculoskeletal services).
Sally has a particular interest in best practice for pre and post-operative management of carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as the complexities of scar management. She has a keen interest in DeQuervains tenosynovitis, and has presented professional workshops on these topics.
Penny Stuart
Clinical Specialist in Hand Therapy Penny Stuart is a Clinical Specialist in Hand Therapy. Penny has been a clinical specialist in hand therapy for 15 years. As a recipient of Byers Memorial Award in 2002, she was able to study for a Masters of Science in Hand Therapy which she achieved in 2004. Penny has lectured and has published work that reflects on her experience of post graduate study.
Her clinical experience has focused on plastic and orthopaedic surgery patients with hand and upper limb injuries, burns, rheumatological conditions, and within the specialist areas of performing arts medicine, and the neurologically impaired upper limb.
Penny has established two hand therapy units, and managed several. She has worked within several renowned hospitals such as Queen Victoria Hospital, Royal Manchester Booth Hall Children’s Hospitals, University College London Hospital, The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore.
Penny has a keen interest in the neurological impaired hand and enjoys combining her knowledge of neuro-rehabilitation and the anatomy of the hand and upper limb. In 2006/7 she spent 12 months in India providing assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for a high profile patient with a head injury and neurological upper limb impairment.
Pascalle Smith
Clinical Specialist in Hand Therapy Pascalle has worked as a specialist hand therapist for 10 years following graduation as an Occupational therapist from Southampton University. After graduation she worked at the Wessex Rehabilitation Unit at Salisbury Hospital gaining specialist knowledge in assessment and treatment of chronic hand conditions and rehabilitation of the upper limb.
Prior to independent practice, she worked at Queen Victoria Hospital East Grinstead gaining specialised experience and skills in major hand trauma and plastic surgery reconstruction.
Pascalle is enthusiastic about the development of service provision and evidence based practice. She is currently undertaking a clinical research project to promote and develop patient care and reviewing treatment effectiveness. This will be published in the near future.
Pascalle has completed a Diploma in Hand Therapy at Derby University and recently achieved Level III BAHT and is planning to gain Accreditation this year.
Pascalle has a particular interest in hand function and activities of daily living. This includes formulating individual treatment plans tailored to patients’ specific funtional needs. She also has a keen interest in thumb injuries and complex regional pain syndrome.
